چکیده

Rockfall causes a large number of accidents and fatalities in steep environments. A realistic quantification rockfall risk is thus crucial for an effective prevention damages loss lives. The estimation block volumes different return periods thereby remains major challenge. In this paper, we present straightforward frequency model (RFM: Frequency Model) its application at 8 sites 7 locations the Swiss Alps. RFM assumes that magnitude-frequency relationships events blocks follow power law. parameters distribution are estimated based on simple classification rock structures field inventories. Beside volume frequency, which very sensitive to consideration events, rockfalls with least one minimum volume, determined. size distributions measured study were well captured by laws. calculated generally slightly higher than scenarios official hazard assessments. uncertainty analysis, however, revealed high variability release respect RFM, increasing period. Both, volumes, particularly exponent law events. Nevertheless, proposed provides objective transparent approach derive individual even if historical inventories missing or insufficient promising alternative merely expert-based approaches.

Interdisciplinary Workshop on ROCKFALL PROTECTION

ii Preface Compared to other landslide movements, rockfall is an extremely rapid process with long travel distances. When an event occurs, the ability of persons to take evasive actions is almost reduced to zero and the risk of injury or loss of life is high. Damages to buildings and infrastructures are likely as well. In many cases suitable protection measures are thus necessary. The workshop ...

Digital Terrain Model Resolution and its Influence on Estimating the Extent of Rockfall Areas

As rockfall can cause a great deal of damage, it is essential to know its spatial propagation. Rockfall models are sensitive to the resolution of input data i.e. the used digital terrain models (DTM). Nowadays, high resolution elevation data are area widely available from airborne laser scanning (ALS). ALS can even provide very accurate terrain information in forested areas. However, rockfall m...

Rockfall characterisation and structural protection - a review

Rockfall is an extremely rapid process involving long travel distances. Due to these features, when an event occurs, the ability to take evasive action is practically zero and, thus, the risk of injury or loss of life is high. Damage to buildings and infrastructure is quite likely. In many cases, therefore, suitable protection measures are necessary. This contribution provides an overview of pr...

A methodology for physically based rockfall hazard assessment

Rockfall hazard assessment is not simple to achieve in practice and sound, physically based assessment methodologies are still missing. The mobility of rockfalls implies a more difficult hazard definition with respect to other slope instabilities with minimal runout. Rockfall hazard assessment involves complex definitions for “occurrence probability” and “intensity”. This paper is an attempt to...

Semi-Automatic Determination of Rockfall Trajectories

In determining rockfall trajectories in the field, it is essential to calibrate and validate rockfall simulation software. This contribution presents an in situ device and a complementary Local Positioning System (LPS) that allow the determination of parts of the trajectory. An assembly of sensors (herein called rockfall sensor) is installed in the falling block recording the 3D accelerations a...
